St. George

The popular legendary saint and, from the fourteenth century, patron saint of England, St. George, is depicted slaying the dragon in the scene on the upper tier of the west wall of the nave. The scene illustrated in the wall painting, which has now almost entirely disappeared from view in the Guild Chapel, shows St George fighting with the dragon in order to rescue Cleodolinda who had been given up to the dragon to appease it wrath. Cleodolinda's parents the King and Queen watch from their castle at the top left of the painting whilst Cleodolinda looks on from the right.
