The Nave

St Modwenna

St. Modwenna

In the first niche on the south wall of the nave was a painting of St. Modwenna which was in a very good state of preservation when recorded by Fisher but is now all but lost.

St. Modwenna, whose shrine was at Burton-on-Trent is said to have received a royal gift of land for a nunnery in Staffordshire. Under her supervision Edith of Polesworth was believed to have received her training. The connection between St. Modwena and the Warwickshire saint, Edith, may explain her depiction in the Chapel.
